My grief counselor laid down another truth bomb. “It only goes one of two ways. People either get stuck, or they choose growth.”
Prior to this conversation, it had been three years of navigating a rare disease and advocating for our son’s life. By age three, our son Jenson had spent most of his life on chemo and in-and-out of hospitals. Fifty-five rounds of chemo (yes 55), a bone marrow transplant from his five-year-old sister, amazing medical care and multiple medical mistakes. Dividing and conquering with my husband trying to survive and keep our heads above water. I gave it my all trying to juggle a Director role, leading others while doing everything in our power to save Jenson’s life.
Miscast in a crazy movie we never auditioned for.
And then the unthinkable. Jenson passed away at age three. I could feel the tug of quicksand pulling me under. Trying to fight it made me sink even faster. I knew I needed help … the kind of help only a trained grief professional could offer.
I remember walking into her office with grief so heavy it felt like an anvil sitting on my chest. With the comfort of a warm chai tea latte in hand, I’d pour out my heart and listen intently while taking copious notes in my little green notebook. My grief expert helped me sort through the complex emotions of heartbreak and tragedy and explained why I had temporarily lost the logical side of my brain…who knew the brain acts like a circuit breaker when the emotions of grief overwhelm? I’d write down her wisdom, and we’d agreed on areas for me to focus on.
After many months, I walked into her office and said, “I think I’m starting to get better.”
“You are. You chose growth. It only goes one of two ways. People either get stuck, or they choose growth,” she declared.
Stuck or choose growth. I choose growth.
This moment became a turning point for me. A mindset shift. I CHOOSE GROWTH.
I applied this powerful phrase to my professional life as a leader too. It only goes one of two ways. Stuck? Or growing? I get to pick. I choose growth.
Helping leaders CHOOSE GROWTH as a leadership coach has become my life’s work. Coaching leaders, like you, through a process of growth and watching clients soar to new heights is the most satisfying thing.
Now, it’s your turn to answer this powerful question: Are you stuck OR are you growing?
If you’re a leader who wants to grow and wants help to break through, message me. Let’s connect.
